The Forgotten Body Parts that Show your True Age
January 23, 2012 by Caribbean Newyorker
When plotting out our daily beauty routine, most of us will focus a majority of our efforts on the face. And rightfully so, because it is our face that is the first thing people notice when looking at us and judging our age and status in society. Meaning, if your face is worn and weathered, it may indicate that you have an outdoor profession or spend a lot of time recreating outdoors, whereas someone with a pale dewy completion clearly has spent a lot of their time indoors or wrapped up under an umbrella. There are two body parts, however, unfortunately often forgotten that can tell age despite having a well- cared-for complexion. These are your neck and hands. “These two areas take on as much wear and tear as our faces but most people ignore these problem spots until it’s too late” says Dr. Melinda Greenfield, owner of the Albany Dermatology Clinic in Albany, GA and online beauty store Skin Care Anthology. “The face, hands and neck are always exposed and for this reason are the true hot spots for showing age, sun damage and skin cancers”. According to Dr. Greenfield, it’s important to realize that we cannot treat all of these problem spots like we treat our face, meaning there are specific products designed for specific locations. “Of course, sunscreen is universal, and it can and should be used on all exposed areas every day, 365 days a year”. Her favorite daily sunscreen is REVISION SKIN CARE® Multi-Protection SPF 50+. This is an extremely light weight moisturizing sunscreen that is great for year round use, even in a hot and humid environment like South Georgia, yet moisturizing enough for the drier climates around the country. “I apply the multi-protection cream every morning after my shower to my face, neck and hands. It’s so lightweight that my makeup goes right on top of it and I can even apply it before a run and not worry about it being too heavy on my skin”, says Greenfield.
Every woman fears a ‘turkey neck’, which is the result of textural changes of the neck skin and laxity due to years of sun exposure. And since wearing a turtleneck year round is not an option, Dr. Greenfield recommends a product produced by REVISION SKIN CARE called NECTIFIRM®. “This is an amazing niche product that really targets all of the aspects of the aging neck”, she says, “for too long we have just been applying our face cream to our neck but those days are over, the neck skin has different needs and this product really hits the spot”. NECTIFIRM is the first and only skin care product designed specifically for the neck and can be purchased at www.skincareanthology.com, Dr. Greenfield recommends using a generous amount twice daily to the entire neck area for maximum results.
Age spots, uneven pigmentation, and thinning of the skin on the backs of the hands are other tell-tale sign of aging and too much time spent in the sun without protection. Since it is impossible to hide or cover up these signs of aging we asked for some advice regarding these troublesome spots. ”Protection with a daily application of sunscreen is always going to be the first thing I recommend”, says Greenfield, “if my patients drive a lot I even go so far as to suggest keeping a light pair of gloves in the car to keep the sunlight off, this can be very helpful since UVA radiation does penetrate the windshield of a car.” Her go to product for rejuvenating damaged hands is a new product in the REVISION SKIN CARE line called LUMIQUIN®. This is another very unique product in that it specifically addresses the 3 main issues of the aging hand by working on moisturizing, brightening and plumping of the skin.
So, when shopping for your next round of skin care products, don’t forget to address your hands and neck before it’s too late. All of these products are available for sale only through a physician and can be purchased at Skin Care Anthology.
