CAN A WOMAN RAPE A MAN? Is a burning topic that has waged many a debates for decades and is the question being asked in the 2010 staging of the award winning play ‘Against His Will’ starring multifarious entertainer Peter Lloyd.
The play written by acclaimed playwright David Heron first premiered in 1997 and tells the astonishing drama-filled story of a computer salesman, Daniel Bryan (Peter Lloyd) who arrives home one night and tells his pregnant wife (Sakina) that his female employer Gillian Forbes played by (Ameila ‘Milk’ Sewell /Nadia Khan) had sex with him – without his consent!
When he hires Attorney Rachel Robinson (Nadean Rawlins) to take his case to court, the stage is set for one of the most controversial and highly publicised cases in Jamaica’s legal history – and one in which the morals and values of an entire nation is called into question.
Since its World Premiere in Kingston, Jamaica over a decade ago, ‘Against His Will’ has emerged as an international success story – one of David Heron’s most successful plays to date, and the winner of five Actor Boy Awards, including Best Production and Best New Jamaican Play. Various productions of the show have played to packed houses, rave reviews and wildly enthusiastic audiences all over the Caribbean, North America and the United Kingdom.
The 2010 edition which opened on August 18th at the Theatre Place, Haining Road, New Kingston, boast a star-studded cast with Lloyd playing the leading man while former television personality Ameila ‘Milk’ Sewell and 2006 Actor Boy Award winner Nadia Khan plays the role of the sultry and seductive Gillian Forbes. Other supporting cast includes; Jerry Benzwick who also plays the role of Daniel Bryan, Sakina, Nadean Rawlins, JP Menou and Marguerite Newland. While artistic director credits goes to Douglas Prout.
